Tuberculosis (TB) in India — The Current Scenario

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be one of India’s most significant public health challenges. Although the country has made notable progress over the past decade, the burden of TB remains high — both in absolute numbers and as a share of the global total.

Progress and Challenges

What’s Improving

  • Reduction in TB incidence and deaths:

  • Treatment access expanding:

  • Fewer missed cases:

What Still Needs Work

  • High overall burden

  • Drug-resistant TB

  • Elimination targets

Why This Matters

TB affects people across all ages, genders, and regions — especially the most vulnerable communities. It has both a health impact and a social impact, often leading to income loss, stigma, and long-term health complications if not treated early.

Early Diagnosis & Treatment Saves Lives

Detecting TB early and completing the full course of treatment not only cures the patient but cuts transmission, reduces the rise of drug-resistant TB, and strengthens whole communities.

India’s fight against TB is far from over — but the progress so far shows that focused public health efforts work. By improving awareness, encouraging testing, and ensuring treatment completion, we can bring India closer to a TB-free future.
